Blue Eagles soar to Carlsberg crown

Soaring Blue Eagles are this year’s K20 million Carlsberg Cup champions after they beat Escom United 1-0 in front of a decent crowd at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday afternoon.

Bensoni Hojani struck the lone goal on the ninth minute to seal the win which earned the Malawi Police Service (MPS) head quarters’ outfit a K7 million pay cheque.

Escom, who are coached by senior players such as Jacob Ngwira, Noel Mkandawire and ex-Orlando Pirates’ Chiukepo Msowoya, who also played, dominated the late stages of the proceedinds but could not beat Eagles’ custodian Duncan Mkandawire.

“It was not an easy ride and our players deserve a pat on the back,” MPS Inspector General Lot Dzonzi told superSport.com on Sunday.

Due to the cup final, the last for the 2012/13 season in Malawi, there were just two TNM Super League games both in old capital Zomba where Civo United had mixed fortunes.

In his debut as caretaker coach, Thom Mkolongo led Civo to a 2-1 win over Red Lions through Jabulani Linje and Patrick Gunde’s goals against one by the hosts’Gibson Nkhonjera.

But on Sunday, Civo lost 3-1 to rookies Bvumbwe Research after succumbing to goals from the league’s leading scorer Vincent Chinthenga’s penalty and others from Titus Banda and James Francis.

Dan Katunga made the consolation for Civo who lie sixth on 29 points while Bvumbwe moved from second to third off the bottom on 18 points.

Big Bullets still lead the standings on 38 points, two in front of Blantyre United while the Lions are third also on similar points.
