Bullets within a point of Lions

Big Bullets powered to within a point of TNM Super League leaders Red Lions after a comprehensive 3-0 pounding of Kamuzu Barracks at Lilongwe’s Civo Stadium over the weekend.

In ending a two-game winless run, Bullets needed a quick-fire double from striker Diverson Mlozi after break and Chimango Kaira’s volley from a rebound to easepressure on under-fire coach Eddington Ng’onamo.

Bullets stretched their tally to 34 points, one behind leaders the Lions.

Despite the win, coming days after squabbles between Bullets board of trustees and the executive committee, the Blantyre popular side remains third on an inferior goal aggregate to second-positioned Silver Strikers, who also have 34 points.

In another game, Mafco beat Azam Tigers 2-0 and inflict a third straight defeat for the Kau Kau whose coach Leo Mpulula, having fired all ‘sabotaging’ senior players since taking over last season, was left clueless.

“Even big teams such as Silver lose, what is unusual with my team losing? This is football you win and lose some games,” Mpulula charged in an interview with a local radio station.

Tigers lost to Mafco a day after being booted out of Carlsberg Cup quarter-final following a 2-0 defeat by self-coached Super Escom at the same venue.

In other games, fifth-placed Mighty Wanderers edged Bvumbwe Research 1-0 through Joseph Kamwendo’s penalty, his sixth league goal this season. But Bvumbwe coach Bob Mpinganjira was not amused with the officiating at Balaka Stadium.

In other Carlsberg Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, Blue Eagles beat the Lions 2-1 in Lilongwe to qualify to the semifinal, joined in the last four by Evirom and Kabwafu who also sailed through after booting out Blue Eagles Youth 2-0 and Epac FC 1-0 in Zomba and Mzuzu respectively.
