Otieno aims for promotion

After falling to the second tier in Kenyan football, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno hopes that he can engineer a quick way back to the Kenyan Premier League.

Otieno is the new head coach at Division One side Mahakama, having replaced former Sofapaka coach Ezekiel Akwana last week.

His main aim will be to try give the club a fighting chance of making it back to the Premier League. He admits that even though it will be a tough ask, he is confident of doing well.

“I am here to try give us a chance of playing in the Premier League once again. The task at hand is not easy. Sadly, I have arrived here slightly late and preparations will suffer,” he said.

“However, I have a band of players who have experience and that matters a lot when it comes to this race. We will have to be hasty and prepare quickly because we have a four-week period to work with.

“I have spoken to the players who are up for it and they have given me hope that we can do it.”

Otieno says that he is currently assessing players at the club but feels that he has enough quality to make it – at-least to the half-way mark of the coming season.

“The players are a mixture of old and new. I am currently looking at them but for sure we will need a certain balance to the squad. I and even the club heads have made it clear that we are going for promotion and nothing else. The players will thus have to work hard and play to the best of their abilities, regardless of whether we are good or not good enough. If we need changes, then we will make most of them during the mid-season transfer window,” he added.
