Rain washes out day 2 at the Gabba

Rain had the final say as the entire second day of the first test between Australia and South Africa was washed out at the Brisbane Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The covers remained firmly in place throughout the day after heavy rain gave way to a persistent drizzle which precluded any play.

It was the first time since 1983 that a full day’s play has been lost to rain at the Gabba.

When play does get underway on day three the Proteas will resume on 255 for two with Hashim Amla, on 90, and Jacques Kallis, on 84, at the crease.

However, they will have to do without JP Duminy after the sad news that the allrounder is out of the tour after picking up an Achilles tendon injury.
